ABOUT RONDOR:
Almo/Irving Music was founded in 1962 by Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss as the original domestic publishing arm of their newly-formed A&M Records. In 1966 the company, with only 200 copyrights, began to reach out for new songs and writers. Today, Rondor Music International publishes more than 60,000 titles covering all musical styles and genres.
As a measure of the company’s success, Rondor songs have captured a number of Grammy awards over the years including “From A Distance”, written by Julie Gold (1991), “Tears In Heaven”, written by Will Jennings and Eric Clapton (1993) and “My Heart Will Go On” written by Will Jennings and James Horner (1998).
Rondor has expanded its range of titles through the acquisition of other major catalogs, including Brian Wilson’s Beach Boys Catalog, the Stax-era East Memphis Music Catalog and the Shelter Music Catalog, featuring the music of Tom Petty, Leon Russell, and Phoebe Snow. Other acquisitions include the songs of Lloyd Price, Difford and Tillbrook, Leo Sayer and a major Jazz catalog featuring the songs of Les McCann.
THE CATALOG
POP/ROCK
Rondor’s musical heritage of Pop and Rock music began with artists and writers signed to A&M Records. This core collection includes such artist/writers as Supertramp, Styx, Peter Frampton, Bryan Adams, Billy Preston, Peter Allen, the Carpenters, Paul Williams, and, of course, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, who helped get it all moving in the first place.<
In the mid-1960’s Rondor began to grow with new hits such as “Windy”, by The Association, followed by Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” and “Somebody to Love”. Over the years the Rondor family has welcomed many great songwriters, all bright stars in the expanding constellation of American pop music. These included artists and songs as diverse as The Beach Boys with “Good Vibrations”, Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman”, and Dire Straits’ “Money for Nothing”.
The Rondor family continued its growth with the signing of Rod Temperton, whose hits include Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and “Off The Wall” and George Benson’s “Give Me The Night”. Part of this stellar group includes Will Jennings who collaborated on Steve Winwood’s album, Arc Of The Diver, and throughout the 1980’s wrote many hits with Winwood, including the Grammy nominated “Higher Love”, and Jim Vallance, who contributed to the success of Bryan Adams. Add to this mix the talented George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, whose songs “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “How Will I Know” were huge hits for Whitney Houston and garnered song of the year awards.
RHYTHM & BLUES
In 1981 Rondor acquired the East Memphis Music and JEC catalogs. This fabulous vein of original southern soul music dates back to the 1950’s beginning with the success of Memphis DJ and song and dance man, Rufus Thomas (“Walking The Dog”).
Among the writers whose songs contributed to the success of these catalogs were Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, David Porter, Al Green, Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Eddie Floyd, Willie Mitchell, Ann Peebles, Al Bell, and Carla Thomas.
COUNTRY
Established in 1982, Almo/Irving’s country music division in Nashville has been a success from the beginning. Working exclusively with songs from the existing Almo/Irving catalog, the new office quickly scored with singles by Alabama and Don Williams.
